Bay Whale Strandings

An interactive map of whale strandings across the San Francisco Bay Area

Bay Whale Strandings
Role Product design, UX/UI, data structuring, mapping system, front-end build
Timeframe April 2026

Bay Whale Strandings is an independent mapping tool built to make whale stranding records across the Bay Area easier to explore by place, time, species, and reported findings. Whale strandings in the Bay had been on my mind for a while, and I wanted to turn available records into a public-facing tool that feels more spatial, legible, and useful for research and education.

The current version maps records from 2005 onward and includes filters for species, year, county, and reported findings, along with optional contextual layers such as shipping lanes and bathymetry. I plan to continue refining it through feedback from people working in marine research, education, and conservation.
